Major Recycling Initiative For Main Drive Kew
29 July 2009
A large number of concrete structures, including dilapidated old buildings, roads and kerbing were recycled a number of weeks ago at the former Kew Cottages site, in one of the most significant environmental initiatives undertaken at the redevelopment, now named Main Drive Kew.
The work involved specialized equipment recycling slabs of concrete into small rocks to form a usable aggregate, which is being used as the base for new roads being created on site. This project has a number of significant environmental benefits, including:
- Reducing in excess of 15,000 cubic metres of landfill that would have otherwise been created from the demolition of buildings;
- Minimizing the amount of new aggregate that had to be bought in to form road base on the site, reducing the carbon footprint of the development.
This recycling has also meant that over 1,500 truck movements to remove the material were no longer necessary, improving safety for residents, traffic conditions in and around the site, and minimizing pollution from petrol fumes.
The recycling initiative forms a major element of the project's commitment to ensure the highest standards of sustainable construction are employed on the site.
