HISTORY & HERITAGE
The development of Main Drive Kew creates an important new chapter at the former Kew Cottages site. The origins of the site date back to 1852 when the site was selected as a settlement area for people with an intellectual disability. The beautiful grounds of the site were landscaped in the tradition of an English Country Park by government superintendant’s Baron Ferdinand Von Mueller and Hugh Linaker. Over 130 botanic species were planted and flourish today, including Canary Island Pines, Monterey Pines and Bunya Pines, with English Elms and Moreton Bay Figs added at the turn of the century.
The developer of Main Drive Kew is working towards preserving the rich heritage of the former Kew Cottages site through the restoration of historic gardens, trees, walkways and three significant buildings to create a place to be enjoyed by the wider Kew community.
